Wednesday evening saw QPR Women visit Plough Lane. Going into this game, the R’s remained unbeaten since the new year. Grabbing a late equaliser against Cambridge City. In their last meeting, tonight’s host walked away convincing winners. Scoring five goals at the Powerday stadium.
Tonight’s match started with the host having the opening chance. The dons found space outside the box for a shot, but McLean was able to push it clear. Moments before the R’s saw Hall fire into the Wimbledon keeper. Coming close again, Wimbledon made a darting run through. Shooting just wide of the post on nineteen minutes. Winning a corner once more Dons pressured the R’s goal. Katie McLean producing another fantastic save to keep them out. A mix-up at the back for QPR handed the home side another goes, fortunately pushing the effort wide of the post. Ending of the opening forty-five minutes was a Brogan Moore strike. Letting one fly, from thirty yards out. Comfortably into the keepers’ hands.
At the break the score remained goalless. Both sides having chances to score, but neither finding the back of the net. When play resumed AFC Wimbledon instantly fired wired. Ashlee Hinks volleying an effort to the side of the QPR goal. A period of worry followed as Laura Hennessey fell to the floor, clinching her back. The referee failing to halt play. Allowing Wimbledon to have a poorly hit effort go out for a throw. Continuing the trend, the home side won another corner. Sending it through the visitor’s box without contact. Leaving the score tired on sixty-six minutes. Seeing the same fate, Billy crossed the ball in for the Dons soon after. Finally breaking the deadlock, Kelly Highman sent a shot flying into the top left-hand corner. Giving the host a lead on eighty minutes. Scoring from twenty-five yards out. Things went from bad to worse in injury time. Ashlee Hinks doubling the Wimbledon lead.
In conclusion it was an enjoyable visit to plough lane, aside from the score. Certainly, one of the better grounds I’ve experienced this season. Perfect views of the pitch. Supported by a pleasant concourse, with a range of food and drink options. The only downfall being a home supporter who switched between Wimbledon and QPR shirts throughout the affair.
