After opening the league season on Saturday with a draw against Millwall Queens Park Rangers turned their focus to cup action. For our first Carabao Cup fixture of the year we made the trip across London to face Leyton Orient. Over 2000 R’s fans packed into Brisbane Road for this evening’s game, creating a fantastic atmosphere in the away stand. Selling out both upper and lower tiers. The host started their league two campaign away at Salford city, where they also drew one all. Omar Beckles being Kenny Jackets scorer that day. Mark Warburton managed his one hundredth R’s fixture for this game.
Queens Park Rangers started the first half with confidence. Playing strong passing patterns, and breaking down opposition lines. Each man did his duty. Chances were flowing well. Once again Rs centre half Rob Dickie broke the deadlock in the 16th minute with a header from a corner, his second goal this week. Lee Wallace provided him further support from the back with playing on the touch line. Demonstrating what he learnt in Scotland. Nearer to half time Orient seemed to wake up, having a chance cleared off the line. But the visitors still the better side in front of 2000 travelling fans. At the break those in the away end were accepting of the performance, even though many had worried about the chances the host were creating. Including myself.
When the teams came back out for the second period, they were met with loud chanting from QPR fans. A beautiful sight to see, especially after so long. However, the performance from the players in blue and white did disappoint. As the half dragged on Rs fans became more concerned, and worries began. Orient grew into to the game at an unexpected rate. Jordan Archer ended up being the sole reason QPR didn’t fall behind, but couldn’t help the equaliser that was put past him. Drinan in the 74th minute. Leyton Orient found the net from very close on with a shot that rolled past the motionless shot stopper. Kick off then followed, but Queen’s Park Rangers did not improve. As time ran out whispers about extra time or penalties began. Penalties it was! One by one each player stepped up to the spot for their crucial kick, just like England in the European final. Two misses from the Os gave their guest the win. Former Harrow Borough and now QPR player finding the winner before climbing into the away end to celebrate with adoring fans. A fan favourite for the team in W12!
In conclusion celebrations continued long into the night. Rs, could he hear chanting in the streets of Leytonstone, including songs about the match winner himself. QPR fans certainly did the club proud. From the very first minute to the last we did not stop singing, many supporters going home with lost voices. Best fans in the world. New songs were also heard this evening with Stefan Johansons being popular on the terraces. Queens Park Rangers now move onto the second round of the Caraboa Cup. Bring on anyone…
