Queens Park Rangers Women continued their league season against Cambridge City Ladies after being knocked out of the cup by Enfield Town. Hosted at Ely City the R’s wanted to get their season back on track, having won and lost an equal number of games so far. Picking up points against Stevenage and Kent united. Our host this afternoon has fared slightly better in their opening games. Cambridge City Ladies won their FAWNL Cup fixture 17-0 against Buckland Athletic, which may concern QPR Women’s defenders.
Shaky start for QPR Women as our host put pressure from kick off. Beginning well Cambridge City looked up for the competition, on what was a sunny afternoon in Ely. Petrol shortages affected the visitors squad options leaving them with only 16 players available. Captain Vicky Grieves lined up at wing back, instead of her normal position in the heart of defence. Almost fitting of the person, herself. Georgie Lewin and Lauren Jordinson made up the back line. The home side took the lead threading a player through. Lucie White came out, but was unable to prevent the goal. Ellie Searle played with flair throughout the first period, providing many chances out wide for the Rs. It was her fantastic cross that gave us an equaliser. Erin pope the goal scorer, netting with her head. My campaign to get them in the England squad continues.
At half time it’s fair to say both teams played well, putting on a great show for spectators. Of which there was not many. Ellie Searle being the star player on pitch. More to improve on though for the visitors, and a second period to do so. Early into the second forty-five Cambridge City took the lead. Ball through the Rs defence leaving the keeper in a hard place, just like the first goal. Seems like the host game plan has worked out. Pushing up the field time and time again QPR Women deserved to take the lead. Georgie Lewin played fantastically, clearly player of the match this fixture. Sue Kumaning gave Brogan a great chance at goal, one the midfielder converted. Scores now level in Ely. In the dying minutes the guest couldn’t have done anymore to grab a winner, working well in the final third. A scramble in the box should have handed the Rs all three points. It would have been deserved.
In conclusion a hard draw to take for the visitors having played so well. Should have stolen all three points at the end, but it wasn’t meant to be. Thank you to the team for their efforts. Next up for the West London side is a fixture against AFC Wimbledon, taking place on Wednesday night. Chloe Sampson will face her former club. This will be awkward!
