A week on from a disappointing defeat at home to Norwich City. QPR Women were back in action. This time playing their fixture at the Powerday Stadium, against Ipswich Town, who are a league above. The match being a FAWNL Cup match up.
Starting this afternoon’s affair was the visitors. Having two chances early on, quickly after kick off. The first going back out of the box for a rebound. Before a second was scrambled away, deep in the host half. Getting forward again the tractor girls were in full flow. Delivering balls into the box from all angles. Initially caught by Katie McLean, but proving to be more problematic as time went on. Firing a free kick narrowly of the bar Ipswich edged ever closer. Back-to-back crosses came in, both being scuffed on the final touch. Keeping with the same tactic. The guest got themselves ahead. Header powerfully put past the keeper, after a pinpoint cross. Perfect play to build up the move. Doubling their lead not long later. Another finish found the back of the net, curling a cross goal shot, behind the keeper who was out of her goal. Missing an easy opportunity. A third could have gone the visitor’s way, scrambled effort ineffective from six yards. Short pass into the box breaking away. However, they managed to take their tally up before the break. Headed into the net from close range. As seen tried repeatedly.
Getting the second half underway. Ipswich attacked with speed, power and purpose. Coming out of the changing rooms all guns blazing. Begging to increase the margin in even more. Two good chances almost did this, if not for missing the target by a few inches. Staying forward. The tractor girls found space to rip apart their opponents. Chance after chance unable to hit the target. Finally, the R’s had their first go at goal this game. Taking the travelling keeper all the way out of her area for a lumped clearance. Long ball up the field, creating an unlikely counter attack. Ending in a goal kick. Despite a brilliant cross into the box. Sliding a shot, Ipswich opened their second half account. Four on the score. Followed by a fifth. Simple shot put away, without any doubt. No pressure applied to the attacker. Shortly proceeded with a sixth. Rifling the roof of the net. A spot kick for the seventh sealed the came before full time.
