My first youth game of the season saw me return to Loftus Road. Queens Park Rangers hosted Barnsley this afternoon, within the same month as the first teams met in West London. Featuring in the Rs squad was first team players George Thomas, Luke Amos and Joe Gubbins. In the run up to this game the host have played Hull and Peterborough, gaining three points from those fixtures.
Openings the first half with a bang was Queen’s Park Rangers. An early run towards the Tykes goal left them through on goal, with only a simple shot required to put them ahead. A chance they took. Following the goal both sides seemed evenly matched. The guest made the most from a mistake by QPR, giving Barnsley an equaliser to bring them back into the game. For this attack the ball was passed back from defence before the Rs keeper made an error which levelled the fixture.
Going into the break Queens Park Rangers were the better team, and had more of the chances this match. Joe Gubbins and Jimmy Dunne both looked comfortable as a pair. Barnsley went ahead at Loftus Road. Another simple ball from the tykes slipped in to the box before being slotted past the keeper. Goal came against the run of play! Rs players looking tired and seen to be under a lot of pressure. George Thomas tried to help the team move up the field, but found it hard to break the oppositions defensive line as he was met by tight marking.
In conclusion the youthful Rs had a similar problem to the first team when facing Barnsley. The tykes seem to have good luck in west London, for a number of years. Next up for the under 23s is a trip to Crewe Alexandre. Thank you to Lee Hoos for having a chat with me before the game, and hopefully Joe proves that he deserves the ten years deal I mentioned.
