Wednesday evening saw Watford U23s host Huddersfield Town U23s in the Premier League cup. The fixture being played out at St Albans. Going into this game, the host have been winless in five games. Last seeing victory against Birmingham City in November. Tonight’s visitors make the trip to London having drawn at home to Lincoln City in their previous outing. Beating Salford dramatically by eight goals to one in their last victory.
Watford started the game with an early attack. Tobi Adeyemo made a charge down the right-hand side, but Loick Ayina was quick to stop him in his tracks. Only a minute from kick off. Carrying on with confidence Adeyemo went forward again. This time being caught offside. Huddersfield’s first chance came five minutes in, when Jaheim Headly sent his cross out for a goal kick. Despite starting brightly Adeyemo was subbed off on the sixth minute. Suffering a clash of heads, resulting in a stoppage. Patrick Jones continued to try and find this evening’s opener as he sent a cross towards Connor Shanks at the back post, but the ball narrowly missed the player. Proving to be a handful Patrick was at the heart of the visitors attacks for the next twenty minutes. Charging down the home defenders time and time again. Seeing a shot blocked on twenty-seven minutes, he was edging ever closer. Watford seemed to improve as we approached half time. Almost scoring after Maurizio Pochettino sent a free kick into the box, but it just missed a free Janeva. To the relief of the young terrier’s squad. In stoppage time Patrick Jones found a goal. Handing Huddersfield, a deserved lead, after working very hard from kick off. Coming into the box from wide he slotted a low shot into the back of the net.
At half time Huddersfield were in the lead. After a dramatic end to the opening forty-five. Giving the travelling squad a well earnt rest, before resuming this fixture. Watford not making use of their chances. When the players returned to the field the guest were in full control. Scoring after two minutes, Connor Shanks heading home. Sending shock waves through the host. Who went on to control possession for a vast amount of the next period. Even seeing the ball hit the net, however the linesman had flagged for a foul. Doubling his goals, Connor Shanks was on the score sheet once more. Smashing in a ball from Patrick Jones come seventy-five minutes. Ending this evening’s action.
In conclusion this match was an end-to-end affair at St Albans. Huddersfield coming out the better. Having found the net three times, without a Watford reply. A side containing a few recognisable faces.
