Queens Park Rangers Women entered the Women’s National League plate preliminary round this afternoon. Travelling away to Maidenhead United Women the R’s looked to get back to winning ways, after a run of poor results. Especially in the cup competitions. Ahead of this game first choice keeper Lucie White got injured, leaving no options in net. Erin Pope stepped up between the sticks. Well done to her for doing so, and thank you for being a team player.
The Rs took an early lead in the fourth minute after an own goal from the host. Delivery in the box from the flanks caused confusion, before rolling into the net of a magpie’s player. Once again QPR found the net as Jo Blodgett scored. Cross came into the midfielder allowing her to strike it perfectly with a left foot, well hit from outside of the box. Not bad for her first goal of the season. Maidenhead managed to pull one back going towards half time. Carvill slotted the ball into the goal after Mathews missed a penalty, fantastic save from Erin Pope to deny the player initially. These things happen.
QPR went into half time ahead, and rightly so. Having started perfectly the team have been delightful in the first forty-five. Every player has performed brilliantly. Couldn’t be prouder of the team. Chance creation was plenty in the period, both wing backs providing a range of options for the attacking force. Ellie Searle outstanding as ever on the left-hand side. Special mention to Jo Blodgett who has not let anyone past the half way line. Laura Hennessey was next to add her name to the scoresheet. A powerful effort from short range, easy finish in the fifty-eighth minute. Comfortably ahead now. Ten minutes later the visitors added another, four one up at York Road now. Young Scottish international Brogan Moore puts the ball into the corner of the goal. Within five minutes the Rs had their fifth. Melanie Hall scores in the seventy fourth minute with a good strike past a still keeper. This is getting embarrassing now. Team work from the guest has been incredible all match, a squad of superstars. On the final minute QPR Women found the net again. Melanie Hall grabbing her second of the afternoon, and another lovely finish. Six one the score stands at full time.
In conclusion this afternoon’s plate match was a wonderful outing for the R’s. every single player did an amazing job, including those that got subbed on from the bench. Great to see all round. Erin Pope did well as a make shift keeper it has to be said. Further up the field Jo Blodgett and Laura Hennessey prevented our opponents from playing. What a performance! Congratulations to the team on an impressive match.
