This weekend QPR Women played their final pre-season friendly before a season in the FA Women’s National League Division 1 South East. Chichester & Selsey Ladies being the opposition. Being played at Selsey Fc the Rs made the journey down from West London for a 2pm kick off, with fans being allowed to support them. Admission for this fixture was £3 for adults and £1 for others which made it a preferable option for ground hoppers. Going into this game the visitors come off the back of a 2-1 home win over Tottenham ladies whereas the host took on Moneyfields Women.
Our last pre-season game began as a very close affair, neither team showing signs of weakness. Passing was fluid across the floor from minute one. The sides looked to approach this fixture with the mindset safety first. As seen often by the men’s side QPR women played the ball back frequently, giving the defensive line plenty of touches. Vicky Grieves leading by example. Sue Kumaning seemed to be the main outlet going forward again as she carried the ball into attacking areas, leaving space for the wider players to run into. A goalless draw at the break. Both teams retaining possession well, and making full use of their full eleven players on the pitch. QPR looked the better of the two sides when going forward, Sue Kumaning excellent again! All was to play for in the second period.
Kicking off the next half the visitors seemed to be looking for a goal right away. Ellie Searle broke away from her opposite number time and time again before putting the ball into the box. Good team play by the Rs gave them the lead here at Selsey Fc. A side footed shot goes over the keeper’s head after some wonderful footwork around the box. Lovely finish Alice! Substitutions then started flowing for QPR with those who did not feature in the first half coming on. Being phased in throughout the time each player was given a period to settle into the game, and get used to the style of play. Melanie Hall broke free into the host keepers’ box before skying her shot. This was shortly followed by another attack from the Rs but it unfortunately hit the bar. Still one nil down south.
The R’s walked away from Sussex with a win at full time. Beating higher league opponents once again, just like the victory over Cardiff City Ladies. In conclusion the impressive performance from young Keeper Lucy White helped the team keep a clean sheet away from home. Incredible talent, and passion from the QPR youth product. In addition to Lucy and Sue I believe Georgie Lewin played extremely well. Unreal defensive play from the new signing, a great role model for younger players. Thank you to all at Chichester & Selsey Ladies for having us this afternoon. Well run club, with lovely people all round. Wishing you success this year! Next up for QPR women is the start of the league campaign, with a home fixture against Stevenage Borough Women being our welcome to the division. Onto the Powerday stadium!
