Kicking off their Sky Bet Championship campaign Queens Park Rangers welcomed Millwall to Loftus Road. The much-anticipated fixture allowed supporters of both sides to begin their return to normality, following the sides they love home and away for a whole season. Like many years before. Going into this game the R’s have had a successful pre-season schedule. Key results included a win over Manchester united and a draw against Leicester City, as well as a win against lower leagued Cambridge United. On the contrast today’s guest failed to beat Gillingham but found delight against Motherwell and Ipswich Town.
A sold-out Loftus Road welcomed the season’s first competitive game. Including a packed away end coming from South Bermondsey. Our guest started the fixture on the front foot, which put Rs keeper Seny Dieng under a lot of pressure. Shot after shot was saved with some coming off the post. The visitors were first to break the deadlock, thanks to a shot from Jed Wallace that found the net in 11th minute. Lions fans erupted as a result of the celebration, which saw the player run the length of the pitch to the away fans. Once we kicked off again the home side realised the disappointment from fans in the home stands. Defender and now goal scorer Rob Dickie brought the score level with a well hit shot after a charging run forward. With the space he gained he had given himself time that he gave him the time that he needed in the 30th minute. Not a bad shot from a centre half.
For the first league half time in W12 the score was even between the two sides, causing debate about how QPR did so far in the concourse. Jed Wallace’s goal left fans universally disappointed in our defence. On the other hand, home fans were pleased by the passion demonstrated by the Rs. When the second half began, we looked significant better on the ball, thus being able to play a more invasive way. Millwall defenders were left stunned. Once more excellent forward play from full backs Lee Wallace and Moses Odubajo let the Rs put pressure on their opponents. However, we did not find a second this afternoon. One key point to note from his game was the drastic amount of time wasting which took place from the away side’s keeper, simply embarrassing to see at this level. Looks like they came here for a draw!
In conclusion this was not the best or worse performance from Queens Park Rangers. But a lot to improve on. Special mention to the club for honour fans who sadly passed away due to the pandemic, which Millwall supporters ruined by booing. Our next fixture sees the R’s made the short journey across London to Brisbane Road in a few days to take on Leyton Orient in the Carabao Cup. Will QPR progress to the following round?
