Say NO to racism!

A late change in my fixture list saw me make my third trip to Silver Jubilee Park this season. Edgware Town Ladies hosted Islington Borough Ladies in the GLWFL Premier division. Free entry this afternoon didn’t seem to attract a crowd to the game, showing the need for more advertising in women’s football. Something the host twitter account is doing a great job at. Lacking officials, a spectator was selected from the crowd to run the line.

Edgware Town Ladies kicked off the first half late after a delay from their guest. Two evenly matched sides competed well, with both having chances to defend and attack. Islington Borough looking slightly better as the game grew on. From a throw in the host found the lead. Having made its way over after a keeper’s mistake the attacking player finished it. Now in front the host became more dominant, pressuring the guest keeper to rush passes. Who had to be subbed on early into the match? A Scramble in the box fell to Islington Borough players feet, handing her a simple chance to equalise. The shot was put into the net from close range, but needed a tap along the way. Both teams now looked to have a rhythm of play. After being behind the visitors are went ahead. The guest delivered in a corner which caused confusion for their host, not one player seemed aware of their positioning. This was set to be an entertaining affair.

As we approached half time there was an incident in the Edgware town box. Allegations of racism were heard loud and clear, with the visitors reacting heavily. A brawl occurred. Tensions went through the roof on and off the pitch, fights broke out in the stands. Grabbing the attention of spectators, more so than the drama unfolding on the poor playing surface. Match surely had to be abandoned. Time went on as the lone official had to make a decision, something no referee should have to deal with. Especially not on his own. The game being called off was his choice.

In conclusion today’s game was a ruined by racism. An interesting fixture to start with, and plenty of goals in the opening forty-five. This is not how it should have ended. Incidents such as this show the importance of education, and the urgent need for it across the world. Say no to racism!
