Gosport Borough hosted Merthyr Town this afternoon having been on fine form at home. Met Police being the only side to leave the south coast with points, one of only two teams to lose to the Martyrs so far this season. The visitors were currently third from bottom in the league. Recently being beaten by lower leagued Hamworthy united, and losing to Truro City at home. Worrying signs for the Welsh outfit.
Staring this afternoon’s action was Dan Wooden who had a shot saved in the seventh minute, immediate pressure on the Welsh sides goal. Theo Lewis broke the deadlock with the opening goal in the twelfth minute. A corner ends up at the players feet, before he puts it home at the far post. Shambolic defending from the Merthyr players. Things went from bad to worse on the twenty-nineth minute, teamwork from Tarbuck and Walsh set him up perfectly to finish. Two down with much more of the game to go. Matt Casey almost increased the host lead, as he sent his effort way of the bar. Doing well to control it initially after it was pinging around in the air.
At the break Merthyr looked to be putting on a shocking performance. Visiting players head visibly dropped after the first goal, allowing the second one to be put away even easier. The Martyrs looking worrying beyond belief. Clubs in a dire situation, showing no signs of recovery. League position proving the point even further. Continuing to go for goal Gosport charged down the left-hand side in the fifty fifth minute. Not that many spectators would have seen it, due to the crowd trouble taking place behind the home sides keeper. Gosport’s younger fans provoking travelling supporters. Stewards unable to contain the rowdy bunch, who are showing aggression. Back on the pitch Dan Wooden got a third. Simple effort. With the game comfortably won the host made all three changes, in the space of fifteen minutes. Making up for the lack of action on the privet park. Next to add his name to the scoresheet was Nicky Dembele. Eighty-four minutes in the player rounded the away keeper, after he made an error leading to the chance. On the stroke of full time Gosport added one more. Luke Hallett heading home from a corner.
In conclusion Gosport Borough were significantly the better team. Won every battle on the pitch, and got rewarded with goals for their efforts. Merthyr Town did not offer anything all game. Fitting the rest of their performances this season, leaving Martyrs fans unimpressed since the beginning of the campaign. Special mention to the Gosport Borough fans who set up from kick off to create issues inside the ground. Petty childish behaviour from a group who’ve never been seen before, presumably supporters of bigger teams locally. Embarrassing response from stewards and club officials made the game hard to watch with the rising threat levels. Joke of a club…
