Going back to familiar surroundings of the Powerday stadium, my visit saw me watch a FA trophy tie between Hanwell Town and Enfield Town. Leading into this match the host beat local side Wingate & Finchley to get here. Enfield narrowly surviving Biggleswade away to reach the same stage. Setting this up for an interesting outing, in front of a bumper crowd. Speaking to Geordies manager Chris Moore before the game, he said ‘Looking forward to today’s game it will be our stiffest test so far this season. I know Andy Leese and Mario Noto well and know they will have there boys ready for today. We’ve been on a good run up until our loss last weekend so I’m looking forward to see how we react to that’ about the fixture.
Starting this cold afternoon at the Powerday with a bang was Enfield Town. Who put the ball in the net only six minutes in, but were denied by the linesman’s flag for offside. Leaving the large bank of travelling fans celebrating until they noticed. The North London side maintained dominance for a period after, pushing for an opener once more. Coming close as they put Hugo to work in his goal. Definitely the better team in the initial exchanges. Hanwell struggling to get out their half, when they did manage to forge a chance, little came of it. Captain Harry Rush doing the most he could to lift his men. McDonald stopping the host scoring twenty-four minutes in thanks to a impressive save. Just before the break the deadlock was broken. Faal passed the ball to Della Verde, before he sent it to Mo for a finish. Enfield finding a way through forty-two minutes in.
At the break Enfield were in front. Difficult playing conditions made the game very close, but the right team were ahead at the stop. Having been slightly better than their opponents. Not much in the game at all as things stood. As the first half played out, so did the second. A tightly faught contest meant the ball didn’t break away too often. Each team being evenly marked. It took until the eighth minute for the visitors to get a second, and seal of the result. Substitute Cunnington did well to reach Faal who had a shot shaved. However, it still found its way into the goal after a spin guided it in.
In conclusion it was a good game of football in West London this afternoon. Both teams set out to win, with Enfield coming out just on top. Hanwell Town did well to reach this stage and should be proud of themselves. Support for each team was plentiful, and chants were heard throughout. Some abusive comments at half time being the only downfall.
