Back-to-back wins in the opening two matchdays of the new league season for the guest set this evening’s event up to be an interesting affair. Being played out at Rectory Park the sides had similar journeys down to the venue, making the contest even tighter before kick-off. Ahead of this game Actonians picked up a victory against Cambridge United and lost to Hashtag united whereas the R’s started with impressive wins against Stevenage Women and Kent united. Before this fixture Erin Pope looked on fine form having scored a hattrick last Sunday, something the home side will have to try and prevent if they want any chance of leaving with all three points. In the last meeting between the two teams Queens Park Rangers Women won the Capital Women’s Senior Cup Final host at Bedfont Sports club.
In the initial period our host looked eager to take an early lead. Within three minutes they had a shot that was deflected out for a corner, before being met again with pressure by another attack through Maria. QPR’s first attempt at goal of note was a breakaway that was saved by confident keeper Paige. As a result of the R’s advances the Actonians shot stopper received a knock which left her grounded for a period time, leading to speculation on the state of the injury from the stands. Hope she is okay. For the remainder of the period the sides went back and forth with neither being able to find the goal.
At half time Actonians looked the better side. QPR Women’s play style could be described as over the top balls looking for Demi Edwards or Erin Pope. Both forwards have contributed significantly to the guest efforts, and deserved a reward for their determination. As the teams reappeared for the next forty-five minutes the home side won a corner thanks to a run from Greta. Inspiration from this quick start motivated them to have shot after shot on QPR keeper Katie. Who dealt with each attempt with calmness and composure. However, Actonians managed to find the winner in the 59th minute, goal coming from Greta who smacked the strike in from over twenty yards. Fantastic effort. As the game to a close the only chance of significance for the visitors was a shot from Demi which hit the post before being caught.
In conclusion tonight seemed to be a reality check for the high-flying West London side, who have only just been promoted to the division. Signs of positive play were seen but lacked the finishing touch, something they started the campaign with in abundance. Next up for the R’s is a home game against Billericay.
