Only a few days after Hanwell Town visited Harrow Borough for a pre-season fixture at Earlsmead I made the trip to the Powerday Stadium to watch them take on Wycombe Wanderers. Kicking off at 19:30 supporters made their way into the ground for what looked to be a great game, now with the option to drink Wrexham Lager as requested by player and Wales fan Gareth Chendlik. Going into this fixture the chairboys recently played Chesham United which ended in a one all draw. This will be a difficult challenge for the Geordies!
Tonight’s visitors took an early lead in this fixture with a penalty minutes after kick off, the host Keeper Hugo Sobte was unlucky not to keep it out after getting a strong hand to it. The Chairboys doubled their lead not to long after breaking down the Geordies defensive line once more. Goal coming from a Shot which was dragged across the net before finding the net! Wanderers’ fans began to cheer. A Wycombe player then picked up a pass made from another in the centre circle, before he took the ball wide before cutting in and smashing it in for another goal. Hugo Sobte had no chance. However, this is where the domination stopped, a sudden change in momentum came. Quick off restarting the game Hanwell created a counter attack to get their first of the evening. Ex Harrow Borough player Harry Rush swiped the ball low and hard into the goal.
A very entertaining first half came to a close, an enjoyable evening so far. Good value for money here at the Powerday Stadium showcasing the quality of non-league teams. During the break supporters for this afternoon’s game were left to refill on food and drink, which was vastly available at this venue. The second period kicked off after a short break, with the host looking great considering the difference in facilities between the clubs. Something the Geordies can be proud of. During this half both teams focused on keeping the ball on the floor. When full time came Wycombe Wanderers walked away with a comfortable win, just like Hanwell Town did on Tuesday night against Southern league side Harrow.
In conclusion a great evening at the powerday! This match was a great advert for non-league football. Hopefully encouraging some of the Wycombe fans to return to this level if their side are not playing, maybe even having a second team. Thank you to tonight’s host for their amazing hospitality, and all the best for the season. Lovely people all round. Will be back very soon.
