Final and flares...

Southern Engineers went head-to-head with Thameslink and Southern this Sunday afternoon. Competing in the railway corporate flexi league final, taking place at Rectory Park. In front of an impressive crowd. Under the summer sun.

The first chance fell to Southern Engineers. Heading over the bar. At the other end, Thameslink tested the keeper. Forcing a low save at his near post. Coming close again, with a similar effort not long later. Offside saving the yellows. Thameslink then took the lead to open scoring. Shrugging off his defender, the advancing player slid a shot in. Almost doubling the score. Thameslink were on the in the final third again. Narrowly missing the target, as the keeper tapped the ball round the post. Having spilled the Initial attempt. Leading to a corner, which was headed over the bar. Another opportunity arose when a penalty was awarded. Firing miles over leaving the margin close. The second goal for Thameslink corrected the mistake. Slotting the ball across the box from close range, for an easy finish past the keeper. Having won possession just past half way. Searching for a way back into the fixture Southern Engineers mounted a charge. Only prevented from a high foot, which batted the ball away. Cutting danger at the very last risk. Switching the play Southern Engineers pulled one back, right before the break. Finishing well in areas of space. Rattling the post. Thameslink had one more chance, before the teams went in for half time.

Starting better than they finished the first period. Southern Engineers had the first chance of the second half, as they did to kick off the affair. Putting a deep cross into the box, for a scuppered clearance, instigating a corner. Which was hastily removed from the area. Looping a long ball. Thameslink’s opening attack was called for offside by the linesman. Before a counter attack launched Southern Engineers up the field, shot going wide. Cutting inside, another opportunity followed. Defensively blocked. Shortly proceeded by an own goal. Against all odds, Southern Engineers almost took the lead for the first time. Smacking a powerful effort into the shot stopper between the sticks. Trying again additional shots were hit with force, bouncing back into the unoccupied area. No one able to apply a finishing touch. Staying in control Southern Engineers fired from distance. Going wide of the target to the comfort of the keeper. Who was visibly exhausted, making claims of an injury. Crafting an error, Thameslink let their opposite numbers through on goal. To their fortune, the post came to the rescue. As it prevented what should have been a certain goal. Approaching full time, a wonderful whack from Southern Engineers plundered off the bar. Stunning supporters, who made the trip to the game. Many believing that was the match winner. In the dying seconds, Southern Engineers won an indirect free kick. Going out for a corner as the referee blew for full time. Penalties deciding the outcome, which went Southern Engineers way.
