On Saturday afternoon a trip to south Wales was made. Once more visiting Merthyr Town, as a they hosted Gosport Borough. A side which I would have watched four times come the final whistle. When the teams last met it was the Hampshire club who would away winners. The first of five goals coming after only ten minutes, starting off an overall poor afternoon for Martyrs supporters.
The opening opportunity of the afternoon fell to the visitors. Ashton Leigh getting a shot away on four minutes, but Joe Woodiwiss made a block. Breaking away, an over-the-top ball was attempted by Merthyr Town. Gosport quick to dilute the danger just outside the box. Narrowly preventing Reffell from scoring. Combining well Curtis Hutson and Lewis Powell were inside the guest box. Firing into the hands of the keeper on eighteen minutes. Staying up the field, the martyrs saw a Reffel chance cleared. Moments before Gosport took the lead. An impressive hit by Matthew Patterson to find the back of the net, as we passed thirty-nine minutes. One additional minute being played before the teams went in for half time.
When the game resumed, it was Merthyr who added the next goal. Curtis Hutson putting a low effort into the far corner. Evening up on sixty-two minutes. Looking to add another, Curtis had a shot at goal. A switch in play just past seventy-one minutes opened up the space. Inches away from finding the target. However, the match was halted soon after. Two travelling players clashing heads leading to a lengthy stoppage. Which put ten minutes of injury time onto the game. Within one minute of that, Gosport had gone in front for a second time. Matt Briggs applying the finishing touch after Jaimie did all he could to keep it out.
In conclusion Merthyr should feel disappointed they did not get a draw. A vital point. Which would have had a huge impact on the remainder of the season. Against a Gosport side, who did not look like anything special.
