On Tuesday night Queens Park Rangers Women tasted defeat for the first time this season. Narrowly losing away to Actonians the R’s looked to get back to winning ways, Billericay being our opponents this time out. Greta Humphries was the difference in the local derby as she found the net with a delightful strike. Making her competitive debut in that fixture was Katie McLean, a very good keeper and addition to the squad. Someone to challenge Lucie White for the starting spot between the sticks. Ahead of this game the guest sits top of the table.
Days after our first away defeat of the season the Rs were back in action. A few changes from the midweek fixture saw Merle drop out of the squad, with Lucie white still not featuring. Beginning this game was an attacking Billericay side. Our visitors created chances for themselves early on, but had the post and Katie McLean in their way. Flying all over the box the young keeper pushed the ball in all directions. Including one fantastic save over the bar! Going forward the Rs looked strong, thanks to Ellie Searle having a wonderful performance as always. Future England starts in the making. The visitors took the lead early on at the Powerday Stadium. A whipped ball reaches the other side of the box before being volleyed by the opposition player. Billericay managed to keep a hold on this game for the rest of the period. However, Melanie Hall levelled the score this afternoon after bringing the ball forward and gently rolling it past the guest keeper. Perfect demonstration of hard work paying off. Well, done Mel.
At half time spectators believed QPR were struggling to find their feet. The ambition and desire were there, but the production wasn’t. Some signs of positivity were spotted. On the other hand, the decision to play captain Vicky Grieves as the wide defender confused those in the ground. Billericay went ahead at Hanwell Town. Corner put in short before finding its way into the box, Th Rs missing chances to clear it away, not good enough. Could count four opportunities to get it out of harm’s way. Another goal for our guest makes this game harder for the Rs. Top corner goal from very short distance left host keeper with no chance. Hit and hope you could say. Questions of Handball in the build-up. This match is slipping away from us slowly!
In conclusion within a few days of losing to Actonians we get our first home defeat. Billericay were the better team. Vicky Grieves looked good in a position she’s not used to, well done skips. I’m proud of you! Questionable decisions by the officials who simply did not look fit for purpose. Outside of the blatant hand ball they allowed horror challenges on key QPR players such as Katie and Sue, putting them at risk of long-term injuries.
