Harrow Borough welcome Queens Park Rangers to Earlsmead Stadium on Wednesday evening. Ahead of the fixture I spoke to former QPR academy player, and now long serving Harrow legend Michael Bryan about his journey in football. Here is what he had to say!
Q) Having started your career at Queen’s Park Rangers academy, how do you believe that helped you later on in your career?
A) It was good grounding at QPR. I enjoyed it until the last probably 2 years of me being there, but that’s football. Made me more determined when I got let go to prove them wrong! Guess I did in certain way.
Q) Making your professional debut for Watford away against Sheffield United was a big step in your career, how did you feel that day having spent a period there in your youth journey?
A) Yes, it felt like it was about time. I was buzzing of course, but had been on bench for like 4/5 games in a row of that season. I didn’t get on often so to get on then was massive for me. During the game I came on left wing up against Kyle Walker, who was an absolute machine.
Q) Following your time in the football league you went into non-league. How did you feel when this happened? And what did you do to help you progress in the future?
A) I was out injured after my contract didn’t get renewed at Watford, so I missed basically the whole of that following season. Which was a killer for me! When I went in to non-league my first proper club was Hendon. We had a very good team with some good players so was enjoyable for sure. In regards to future obviously didn’t have the full-time income of football anymore, so had to get in the real world. Start doing proper work as some would say.
Q) You also made appearances for Northern Ireland at youth and senior level. How did you find out? And how did you and your family react when you found out?
A) Getting called up to senior side came about when I started my first game against Coventry City. They had a Northern Irish player at time, who played loads of games. I done well against him then few days after got call saying I’ve been called up. Obviously, I was buzzing! My family were happy for me. It was a mad experience when I went out on the tour.
Q) Now you’re at Harrow Borough, and have been here for a while. What is your favourite moment at the club?
A) My favourite moment at Harrow would be probably beating Margate away to reach first round proper of the FA Cup. It was massive for the club, and was good day out at Northampton. Result maybe not so!
Q) Very soon we are welcoming Queen’s Park rangers to Earlsmead stadium. What do you make of this fixture?
A) Obviously it’s big for the club, a lot of QPR fans are based around Harrow. So, it will hopefully get good crowd in… maybe even get a decent result.
Thank you to Michael Bryan for taking time to answer my questions, and I wish him all the best for the new season with the Borough. Come on you Reds!
