Shortly after speaking to Alfie Cain, I spoke to Harrow Borough’s new forward James Ewington. Having jointed the Reds with a track record of being prolific at this level the exciting attacker discussed his path to the club and his ambitions with the Middlesex side. Thank you so much to James for taking time to do this interview and I wish him all the best for the new season. I’m sure he’ll take us where we need to be. My forward!
Q) Having recently joined the Borough from divisional rivals Walton casuals you are a new addition to the squad. What is one thing that attracted you to the club?
A) There were actually a couple of factors that made me want to join Harrow but the main reason was the chance to work with Steve as a manager. Steve is someone that I’ve spoken to a few times over the last few seasons and I really respect the way he has always spoken to me and talked about his visions for the club. When I spoke to him in the summer, he talked about the squad of players he had and I felt like I would fit in really well here. Harrow are a well-known non-league club and well respected at this level, so for me it was a no brainer to sign a contract here.
Q) During our pre-season fixtures you’ve taken the captain’s armband. How has this impacted the role you play in the squad?
A) Obviously Ben Tricker was announced as captain but he got the opportunity to go on trial at Wycombe so was absent for a few weeks. He then contracted Covid and missed the first game of the season too. I think in his absence the squad is quite youthful and being an older head and an experienced player at this level it just got handed my way. It doesn’t change my role much to be honest. I’m in there to score goals and spearhead the attack and that’s what I’ll continue to do. But with age I think I’ve naturally learnt to talk to players more and give the younger boys guidance and advice where needed, and I would do that with or without the armband.
Q) When signing for the Reds you’ve come of the back of prolific seasons in the league. What are your aims for this seasonal an individual?
A) I think individually my target is just as simple as scoring as many goals as possible. I’ve come in to a new team and it does take time to learn how everyone plays and where people’s strengths and weaknesses are. I’ve never been the kind of player to give myself a goal “target” and my aim is simply just to score as many of the opportunities that I get given. I do have a figure in my head that if I didn’t get as a minimum, I would be disappointed, but maybe I’ll share that with you at the end of the season
Q) In the build-up to the league we’ve seen you feature in a few formations. How would you describe your play style?
A) For me I like to play in teams that get the ball forward quickly. I make lots of runs and I’ve always tried to be intelligent about making my runs, whether it’s to get in behind or create space for someone else to drop in and get the ball. I will admit I’m the not the biggest in terms of height, but I think you play to your strengths and mine are pace, movement and hard work! I don’t think you need to be 6ft4 to play in this league if you are good enough, and I’ve proved that season after season by scoring goals. The last full season (pre Covid) I scored 30 league goals at Step 3 and I know that if I’m given the ball in the box, I know I’m a danger!
Q) With the season underway and the league season starting with a loss to Yate. What do you make of our chances in the league and cup this season?
A) I think we have a very competitor squad. The challenge will be keeping everyone fit and keeping the players in form fit. With Covid still proving an issue and this affecting pre-season massively for us it could be very up and down but that’s out of our control. I personally think we have a squad of players that can compete with any team in this league and I would be hopeful that the fans will see an improvement on the league position over the last couple of seasons. I don’t want to give too much away in terms of our targets and aims for the season but I think most players will tell you that they want to be in and around the play offs and I don’t see any reason why that can’t happen with the squad we have here at Harrow this season.
