Brendan Matthews interview!

After making a fantastic start to his loan spell at Egham Town I caught up with Brendan Matthews. The former Harrow Borough, and current Hanwell Town star took some time to discuss his career up to this point.

Q) What was your journey into non-league like, and how has it changed over the years?

My journey into non-league was different to others to be honest. After being turned down at a football trial I went to Egham town youth team and had a great season, scoring 30 plus youth goals got me a chance to play for the first team at 16 years old and I kicked on from there.

Q) You’ve played a wide range of games across the non-league pyramid throughout your career. Having been coached by a range of managers. What is one piece of advice you received that you’d pass on to younger players?

Having played a lot games for different clubs and meeting different players my advice for young players is work hard firstly, don’t take criticism personally and lastly go out on the pitch and enjoy playing.

Q) Before joining your current club, you were at Harrow Borough. What was your favourite memory in a red’s shirt?

My favourite moment in a red shirt would have to be against Salisbury where we drew 2-2. Really good game personally. Overall, the boys are good people and the changing room was a good place to be loads of banter.

Q) Currently you play for Hanwell Town, a great club with an increasing Geordie following. How was this impacted your time with the town, and how vital is support at that level?

Hanwell is a really good club, they do a lot for the players what give us the best opportunity to go out and get results. It’s been a stop and start season for me after having covid twice so my fitness has been up and down but I’m working hard to get back to where I want to me.

Q) How do you believe your play style will aid you this season? What are your individual goals for this campaign?

My playing style will help out because im always going to work hard for my teammates and give them an outlet. I always believe in my ability to score goals or riggle out of tight situations. My goals for the season are promotion and score as many goals as I can.

Thank you to Brendan for answering the questions, and his contributions to Harrow. Wishing him the very best for the future. Any club would be lucky to have him.
