Ahead of back-to-back weekends watching the Martyrs, I took a look into four players who will play a vital role in their survival hopes. As well as their journeys in football which lead to playing for Merthyr Town. In what could be the most important season for the club since reforming in 2010.
The first player in this one to watch is Jaimie Cogman. The Australian shot stopper started his career at Brisbane City, before moving into the Brisbane Roar academy. Where he spent time at the club leading up to his South Wales move. Having arrived in the United Kingdom, the goal keeper joined up with the Cardiff City academy. Beginning as an apprentice in 2019. Going on to train and represent the Bluebirds at under 18s level. Whilst getting a qualification, which enabled him to go to university. Jaimie also went on to be promoted into the under 23s squad. Gaining interest from his national team. Now applying his trade at Merthyr Town. Keeping a clean sheet in their last outing at home to Wimborne Town.
Further up the field, Jaime is joined by Kieran Evans. Another key player in the Martyrs survival hopes. Joining Swansea City aged six, the midfielder went on to graduate from the academy. Signing his first professional contract in 2016. Representing the Swans at under 23 level, and making one first team appearance off the bench. A EFL Trophy fixture against Charlton Athletic. However, since then Kieran has represented a few other teams. Including his national team in the FA Victory shield. Picking up the trophy in 2014.
Merthyr Town also made the signing of Lewis Powell this season. Adding his skills to the club from Larkhall Athletic. Following a fantastic season in the Southern League Division One, where he picked up the golden boot award. For the second time in a row. Similar to Kieran, Lewis began his career at Swansea City. But he was released in 2006 by then league one side. Setting up a move to Bristol Rovers. Going on to play for a range of non-league teams, after leaving the west country club. Taking his total southern league appearances to over 500 matches. Handing him vast amounts of knowledge which will aid his teammates in the final run in.
The final player is one who needs no introduction. Kerry Morgan. Born in Merthyr Tydfil, the dynamic winger is back representing his home town club. Having gained experience in a wide range of leagues and teams. Including spells in Sweden and Spain. His most impactful period being his time at Newport County, where he played for the Ambers 99 times. Over a three-year spell. A Conference South win being the stand out moment.
