Contradicting Cymru!

On the 22nd of December 2021 the Wales football association announced supporters will no longer be able to attend matches taking place within the country. Following a rise in cases of Omicron, another coronavirus variant. As decided by the government after initially agreeing to limit crowds to fifty people. Something that will leave teams with significant revenue losses, which may have a long-term affect. Subsequent discussions between the parties involved occurred, a decision to suspend domestic games was reached. Reminding supporters of the period without sports due to the initial outbreak. Affecting the well-being of many across the nation. All three tiers of the Welsh pyramid being included, leaving those competing in England the only option.

The highest placed Welsh team, Cardiff City were also affected. Having their boxing day match against Coventry City postponed. Their second of the month. However, bluebird supporters will be able to travel to Dean court for their final match of the year. Local rival Swansea also being disturbed. Teams further down the ladder have seen an increase in sales for away tickets. Most notably in the fixture between Altrincham and Wrexham. Over a thousand Reds fans making the journey to Moss Lane that afternoon.

As a result of this questions having been asked if the decision will impact the number of cases. First minister Mark Drakeford advising spectators to ‘think carefully’ before making the journey across the border to follow their teams. Furthermore, showing his ignorance for the important role football can play in people’s lives. With other industries able to run without restrictions. In addition to this, the announcement included the news that club houses could remain open. Contradicting the purpose of the decision entirely.
